The History and Folklore of Gemstones
There are numerous accounts of myths and legends that have been associated with gemstones. Some believe that there are certain stones that have the ability to protect the wearer from evil or to bring them good luck. Other stones are believed to have the special ability to heal. There are even stories that tell of stones that are cursed, someone would start a rumor that the mine was cursed for some made up reason but it was usually to keep unwanted prospectors away, therefore keeping all of the minerals safe.
Crystal gazing has been around since the Greek and Roman times. The idea is to find a large flawless crystal (not easy to do) and have it shaped and polished in to a ball. The person would gaze into the ball, allowing their eyes to go out of focus while interpreting the misty “image” and allowing them to “see” into the future.
Crystal healing has been around for a very long time. Just about all gemstones are believed to have the power to influence a person’s health and well being. Each stone is thought to be associated with a specific body part. “Healers” believe if you place the correct stone on a vital nerve point, the light that is reflected off the stone is thought to be absorbed by the body and ultimately sends healing energy to the needed area of the body.
Gemstones come in a very wide spectrum of colors and our ancestors have created a history of personal associations with not only their color but their significance with certain aspects of their lives. This association has lasted over time and a fairly detailed account still remains.
We have not only come to associate these specific colors specific events throughout the year, but we have also imparted a particular mystical symbolism to the gemstones. This give each color a symbolic, spiritual meaning. Some of the more common ones are listed below.

Stones for your Birthday
It is believed that the creation of having a special stone that is to represent a specific month is thought to have been around to at least the first century. They believed that by dedicating a certain stone to one of the 12 months, it would protect those that were born in that month. It is also believed that the twelve stones that are in the great breastplate of the Jewish high priest may have had an influence on establishing this idea. Whether this is really true or not it has long been the belief that owning something that is directly associated with something that is uniquely related to you is still popular to this day. The following present-day list of birthstones was adopted in 1952 by the jewelry industry:
